Rafaela Sinderski
journalist and researcher
I’m a data journalist and researcher interested in political conflicts — especially their causes and consequences for press freedom and democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean. A programming learner, I studied data analysis and visual storytelling in the Lede Program at Columbia University in New York. I also hold a master’s degree in Communication and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Brazil. In the first half of 2023, I was a visiting researcher at Tulane University in New Orleans. I monitor general attacks and gender-based violence against journalists at the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji), investigate the implementation of the Access to Information Law (LAI) in Brazilian municipalities, and serve as secretary of the Forum on the Right of Access to Public Information. As a Brazil Researcher at ACLED, I collect and code real-time, disaggregated data on political violence and demonstrations in Northern Brazil.
I believe communication is a tool for social change. I’m always open to exchanging ideas on projects related to political violence, human rights, gender, and data.
